How To: Make a Good Impression on Your First Day!

First day jitters—everyone gets them, and unless you ooze confidence, they are generally unavoidable. Initial introductions, finding your way around the office, and becoming comfortable in a new setting are all first day requirements. First days can be hard, but we’ll give you a walk through on how to make great first impressions, and navigate your way to success in the office!

Show up early

Punctuality is something that your boss, and your coworkers who have early deadlines, will notice. Showing up with time to spare to get situated, locate the nearest bathrooms, and introducing yourself will go a long way.
This means waking up with more than 15 minutes to get ready, you don’t want to be scrambling trying to find your keys and end up getting stuck in traffic. Give yourself ample time to be prepared, and to take a breath.
Make sure you dress to impress. If you are unsure of what the dress code is at your new place of employment, play it safe with a more conservative outfit. But most importantly, look professional.

Observe office etiquette

Every office dynamic is different. Your old office could have been super laid back and easy going, but that doesn’t mean your new one will be the same. Go into the first day acting as you would if you were meeting your future in-laws for the first time. Be polite, shake hands, and DON’T be staring at your cellphone. Even if you see your coworkers on their phones, don’t bring it out on the first day as this can come off as unprofessional.
Until you get a feel for your workplace culture, don’t do anything you wouldn’t want your boss to see.

Make the proper introductions

If you’re introverted, or extroverted, introductions can be intimidating. But they are crucial to developing relationships in the work place. Do your best to appear confident, initiate the introductions, and remember that people appreciate sincerity.
When you meet someone, shake their hand, repeat their name back to them, and ask them a little about their role in the company. This will show that sincerity and that you’re listening.
At lunchtime, bring your lunch, and make your best effort to go and mingle with your coworkers. This will show that you are friendly and approachable.

Call it a day!

Well, you’ve made it to the end of the day. Your coworkers are starting to wrap up last minute phone calls, and packing up. However, lingering for a few minutes will show to your boss and your coworkers that you’re there for more than just a paycheck. Give yourself some time to reflect on your first day, the people you’ve met, and the role you are going to be playing within that company.
You have now successfully navigated your way through your first day without any spilled coffee or blunders, congratulations. You are now on your way to being a valued star employee.
